EduMed Develops Home Study Program Under Grant From Cardinal Health for Positron Emission Tomography Physicians and Technologists

MINNEAPOLIS, June 16, 2004 — The EduMed Corporation, a leading developer of medical and pharmaceutical educational products and services, today announced a new continuing education program for physicians who read and interpret the results of positron emission tomography (PET) scans.

The PET Champions Series Home Study Program was developed under a grant from Cardinal Health, Inc., Philadelphia, a leading provider of products and services supporting the health care industry. With up to 30 credit hours of continuing medical education (CME), the program provides detailed case reviews and is designed for physicians who need education beyond the introductory level. It is computer-based and delivered via a CD-ROM with unique assessment and credit awarding delivered via a specially designed Internet site.

The Home Study Program is the first CD program that satisfies the entire continuing education requirements for physicians and technologists of both ICANL (Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Nuclear Medicine Laboratories) and ACR (American College of Radiology) lab accreditations. PET lab accreditation is required for reimbursement in a growing number of locations nationwide. As more payers move toward mandatory accreditation -- or organizations want to promote higher quality services -- this CD will provide the category 1 CME or CE credits needed to meet those accreditation requirements, without the expense or inconvenience of travel.

This highly interactive learning format features 60 reality-based case reviews plus technical notes from the leading PET experts in the country, including the CD content editor R. Edward Coleman, M.D., of Duke University Medical Center.

According to Coleman, “What is unique about this learning format, is that the reader is asked to make clinical decisions throughout each case, and then receives a detailed discussion from an expert on why the decision they made was either correct or incorrect.”

The program reinforces the importance of promoting appropriate uses of PET, correlating findings with anatomic findings, avoiding the pitfalls of artifacts and normal variants, and includes recommendations for patient management changes based on PET results.

“I showed two of the cases to my residents in a one-hour teaching session. The response was extremely positive. Two cases per hour with detailed discussion accomplished more than didactic lectures, and the retention seems to be greater. This new approach may change the way we teach, “ reported one case contributor, Alan Waxman, M.D., Director of Nuclear Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in California.

“Cardinal Health recognized a key need to make education available fast – when and where their customers need it. We’ve talked to people who have received PET reimbursement payments previously and then suddenly local policy changes, creating a need to obtain lab accreditation fast to continue getting reimbursed. This is the first tool that can provide that level of education in a single weekend,” said Dale Moser, president of EduMed. “We are very excited about managing the program for Cardinal.”

Accreditation programs generally demand 20 PET Category 1 CME credits for physicians and 15 CE credits for technologists just for initial approval, followed by additional periodic credit requirements going forward.

“We are very proud of our commitment to education in the field of PET,” commented Sue Wallace, executive director of PET Marketing and Strategic Relations for Cardinal Health. “We believe that education is the key to success for our customers, and we intend to continue aggressive programs to deliver education to interpreting and referring physicians, as well as technologists, through both accredited and non-accredited programming. Our support of educational programs developed by EduMed allows us to help deliver the accredited programs that are so frequently asked for today.“

The overall goal of the PET Champions Series, which is the host of this Home Study CD, is to improve the quality of PET services being provided to patients and referring offices nationwide. As the quality of services provided by PET centers increases, so will the number of patients receiving PET as part of their disease management regimen.

Pre-registration for a copy of the CD can be completed on line at www.cardinal.com/PETChampions or at the Cardinal Health exhibit at the SNM annual meeting. Final release is scheduled for late July.

Previews of the PET Champions Series HomeStudy CD will be available at the Cardinal Health booth at SNM (#1234) and at the PET Champions Series Breakfast for physicians held on Monday, June 21 in Philadelphia. Registration is required for the breakfast and is available at www.cardinal.com/PETChampions.
